We're delighted to note that a recent paper in the Journal of Information Systems Education (JISE) describes how the Max Labs and their "storified" narrative approach played a key role in a redesign of Temple University's large Intro to IS course.
The authors explain how they leveraged the Max Labs as "a powerful illustration of active learning" that allows students to "apply concepts ... to an actual information system.”
We especially love their articulation of what makes "Max" a great character for engaging students:
“Max” has many of the same experiences that the students have. Her instructions and explanations enable students to do complex work in Salesforce. The narrative gives the students a framework to help them understand the work that they are doing, and helps them remember what they have done. Max is in many ways a model student: hard working, independent, fun, someone who takes the initiative and tries things out without fear of making a mistake.
Take a look and you'll see the Temple team even created their own labs extension, building off the character of Max's boss, Riley, with a "storified" JavaScript coding challenge they titled "Riley's Rankings."
We're super-proud & honored to see the Max Labs having this kind of impact in the MIS educational community!
